The cultural use of the space is governed by a tripartite agreement between the Municipality of Budapest’s District II, the Eidolon Foundation, and the OTP Group.

“From morning to noon today, we encounter more images than a person in the nineteenth century might have seen in an entire lifetime. Everyday photography is not only memory – it is a shared cultural language: a meeting point of history, sociology, the history of photography, and personal experience. With the opening of the Eidolon Centre, our goal is to give this long-undervalued visual heritage a fitting institutional home,” said Róza Tekla Szilágyi, co-founder and director of the Eidolon Centre for Everyday Photography.

International professional background, Hungarian precedents

The idea for Eidolon was born in 2023, out of the recognition that everyday photography – despite its outstanding historical, artistic, and social significance, and its immense popularity – had no independent institutional representation anywhere in the world. To fill this gap, Eidolon has spent recent years building its professional presence in the field of everyday photography through research, international collaborations, and its own programmes — initiatives such as the Talks on Everyday Imaging discussion series, the Eidolon Journal, the Eidolon Club, and the international grant programme, now in its third year. Everyday photography is also an exciting and easily accessible field for general audiences, as shown by the success of the Kereki Sándor exhibition at the Capa Center in Budapest, curated by Eidolon, which drew wider public attention to the significance of everyday and amateur photography.

The platform also builds on strong Hungarian foundations. Decades of collecting work by the Horus Archives, together with earlier initiatives in Hungarian everyday-photo research and archival thinking, have created the professional groundwork on which Eidolon can build as an international institution.

In this tradition, Fortepan plays a prominent role, having become one of the most important initiatives for preserving Hungarian visual memory. The new centre is planned to host exhibitions, screenings, talks, and community programmes connected to Fortepan, so that the collection’s materials can appear not only in the online archive but also as living cultural content. Eidolon and Fortepan collaborate on numerous other joint projects as well.

The centre is a privately funded, nonprofit institution, maintained by the Eidolon Foundation. Its establishment and long-term, sustainable operation rest on ticket revenue, a community that understands and supports its mission, private donations, and institutional support.

Everyday photography as social memory

“In the age of modern technology, everyday photography is at once an authentic carrier of our shared past and a powerful form and language of the contemporary visual culture of everyday life,” said György Simó, the other founder of the Eidolon Centre and founder of its supporting foundation.

Herein lies the beauty of everyday photography. What at first seems like a personal memory, a curious find, or an insignificant digital image can, over time, become a readable record of an era’s culture and social memory. The Eidolon Centre for Everyday Photography works with exactly these images, so that scattered private memories can become a researchable, interpretable, and shared cultural heritage. “Eidolon” is an ancient Greek word meaning image or semblance, referring to the way photography preserves a moment of reality while the memory itself remains fragile and elusive.

In the Heart of the Margit Quarter

From the outset, the goal of the Margit Quarter programme has been to create an open, vibrant, and inspiring cultural district in District II, built on strong local communities, high-quality cultural content, and value-creating collaborations. Thanks to this deliberate work of cultural urban development, the Margit Quarter has become an attractive professional environment capable of hosting culturally significant initiatives on an international scale. It is here that the Eidolon Centre for Everyday Photography – an internationally pioneering institution built around everyday photography — will find its home, strengthening local identity and enriching the district’s cultural life through its community, educational, and outreach programmes.

“Stories converge in the Margit Quarter. This is especially true of an institution that, through everyday photography, connects personal memories with shared cultural heritage. We are proud that, with the cooperation and partnership of the municipality, the Eidolon Centre for Everyday Photography can be realised in this special space, reimagined from a former bank branch. An institution is finding its home in the Margit Quarter that is not only unique on an international scale, but will also create new stories, new encounters, and new community experiences for the district,” said Előd Bendegúz Varga, Deputy Mayor of Budapest’s District II.

The nearly 600-square-metre space is planned to house three modular exhibition areas, a library, a research room, and a workshop space. The centre will host exciting new Hungarian and international exhibitions, visual-literacy education programmes for children and adults, renowned international professional forums, and community events.

About the Eidolon Centre for Everyday Photography

The Eidolon Centre for Everyday Photography is the world’s only institution and platform dedicated specifically to vernacular photography. It was founded by György Simó, businessman and venture capital investor, and Róza Tekla Szilágyi, art historian. Its professional work is supported by an international advisory board: Geoffrey Batchen (University of Oxford), Andrew Dewdney (London South Bank University), and Oksana Sarkisova (Blinken OSA Archive, CEU).

Photo credit: Vitold Muratov, Amateur photographer visiting.jpg, 26 January 2019.
