Eidolon Club vol. 5 – Narcissus in Bloom: book launch & artist talk with Mattie Colquhoun

Watch the video of Mattie Colquhoun's lecture and the following discussion from our fifth Eidolon Club event, held on 13 November, 2024.

Mattie Colquhoun’s latest book, Narcissus in Bloom: An Alternative History of the Selfie, was published in August 2023 by Repeater Books. The book offers a fresh perspective on the selfie, interpreting it not merely as a postmodern pathology but as a reflection of broader political discontent and a yearning for self-transformation.

We invited the author to Budapest to host a book launch event and deliver a public lecture on the art historical and philosophical context of the selfie, narcissism and its related phenomena. In their lecture, held at Művház, Colquhoun explored the intersections of everyday imaging practices, capitalism, and the influence of online visual culture on mental health, personal relationships, and the questions of our shared future.
