Date: October 9, 2025, 6:30 PM
Venue: 2B Galéria, Budapest
The exhibition “1945 – Hogyan tovább?” (In English: “1945 – What Next?”), organised by the Hungarian Jewish Museum and Archives at the 2B Galéria, explores the post-Holocaust years following liberation. The photograph chosen as the exhibition’s motto is the ID photo of artist Anni Gáspár, which entered the Museum and Archives’ collection from a family legacy.
Perhaps the most striking feature of the photo is its “deficiency”: the document it originally belonged to served as a discriminatory marker of the deprivation of rights for Jewish citizens during the Holocaust. However, its owner later tore off this document.
At the eleventh event of the Eidolon Club series, focusing on this photograph, we will attempt to unfold what kind of narratives emerge if, starting from a single image, we try to explore:
✹ the format, i.e. the history of the ID photo as a genre,
✹ the storytelling potential inherent in the photograph,
✹ the story of how the photo entered the collection,
✹ and the life of the person portrayed
all in the context of a situation where the photograph itself was an instrument of persecution and the repressive practices of the state apparatus.
Guests:
Zsófia Farkas, one of the exhibition’s curators
János Mátyás Balogh, Historian, Senior Archivist (National Archives of Hungary)
Moderator:
Róza Tekla Szilágyi, Director of the Eidolon Centre for Everyday Photography
Cover image: Anni Gáspár’ ID photograph from her wartime identification document, 1945, Hungarian Jewish Museum and Archives
Participation is free of charge.
The event is organised in co-operation with the Hungarian Jewish Museum and Archives.
