Eidolon Club’s freshly launched monthly event series explore everyday imaging’s diverse legacy.

Our goal is to offer fresh perspectives and networking opportunities centred around the appreciation of vernacular imagery. Eidolon Club’s monthly event series invites our Budapest-based community to delve into new dimensions and challenge traditional perceptions of visual culture. Through curated programs, film screenings, workshops, talk events, and guided tours hosted at various venues, Eidolon Club provides a platform for enthusiasts, professionals, students, and curious individuals to come together and celebrate the most ubiquitous, ever-present, wide-ranging form of visual communication of the last two centuries.

At the first Eidolon Club event we will screen the Sundance winner film titled And the King Said, What a Fantastic Machine!

The directors of the film recorded a short video message for us, which we will show before the start of the film - and after the screening, we will talk to creators and experts who know the camera as a tool well. In addition to discussing the film experience, we will talk about how the practice of everyday imaging that weaves through our days – and the resulting industry around it – might affect us as a society.

Fantastic Machine is a thought-provoking examination of humanity’s infatuation with itself, and with framing the world through the camera’s lens. Filmmakers Axel Danielson & Maximilien Van Aertryck once again turn their cameras directly on society, this time to explore, explain and expose how our unchecked obsession with image has grown to change our human behaviour. In the process, the filmmakers also raise the question of societal consequences stemming from the image output of 45 billion* cameras on the planet (*total expected in 2022) and how humanity went from the image of a backyard to a multi-billion-euro content industry in just 200 years without a road map.
